Moving Made Simple
Welcome back to our blog! We have some advice to help you when you move into Link 480, our apartment community here in Beverly, MA. From planning to packing, we’ve got ideas to save you time, grief, and energy.
Get organized! Keep all of the info about your move in one place. A simple notebook, the notes section of your phone, or an app like one of these from RISMedia can go a long way. Be sure to allow enough time to pack up your belongings before you move. This is also an excellent opportunity to downsize. As you pack, get rid of things you no longer use or that are broken or obsolete. Use a moving checklist like this one from Two Men and a Truck to help you stay on task. If you’re going to be doing the packing yourself, we’ve got tips below!
Be prepared with packing supplies — boxes, tape, markers, packaging materials, moving blankets, etc. — this will help the process go more smoothly. It’s also a good idea to have multiple sets of markers and tape.
Pack in advance. Start by packing items which are rarely used, seasonal items, and decorative items. Leave the things you use daily for last, for example, pack your dishes and use paper plates for the last week before you move.
Take pictures before you take things apart to move them, for example, the back of a desktop computer (and label the cords before you pull them out). Pack hardware in ziplock bags — label the bag and tape it to the item it goes with.
Pack the things you know you’ll need immediately upon arrival in clear plastic boxes so you can easily see what they contain. Put them in the back of the moving truck (or in your car) so they are easily accessible once you get to your new apartment. Include things like tools for putting together furniture, linen for your bed, paper plates and plastic cutlery for your first few meals, and so on.
Keep important papers with you so you know where they are. This includes things like addresses, contracts, passports, lease, etc.
Take pictures of your old, empty apartment before you leave and take pictures of your new apartment before you move in for a visual record of the condition of the apartments.
